What This Involves

West Virginia is steep, wet, and geologically inclined to move. Slope failures here are rarely sudden surprises — they announce themselves first as tension cracks at the crest, leaning trees, bulging at the toe, or a driveway that keeps needing regrading in the same spot. Ground that is moving does not stabilise on its own, and every wet season makes the eventual repair larger and more expensive.

Stabilization is fundamentally a water problem wearing a soil problem's clothing. Nearly every failure we are called to traces back to water: surface runoff concentrated where it should have been dispersed, a spring nobody accounted for, or groundwater with nowhere to drain building pressure behind a mass of soil. We treat the water first and add structure second, because a retaining wall built without drainage behind it is simply a more expensive thing to fail.

How We Work

    Diagnose the failure

    Identify what is actually moving and why — surface erosion, shallow slump, and deep-seated rotational failure need completely different responses.

    Control the water

    Intercept surface runoff above the slope, drain any springs, and relieve groundwater pressure. This alone resolves a surprising share of problems.

    Reshape the grade

    Lay the slope back to a stable angle, or bench it into terraces, where there is room to do so. The cheapest stable slope is a flatter one.

    Add structure where needed

    Retaining walls, riprap armouring, gabions, or geogrid-reinforced fill — always with drainage behind and a foundation below frost depth.

  5. 5

    Armour the surface

    Erosion control matting and rapid vegetation establishment, because bare soil erodes no matter what is holding the mass in place.

Ask Us Directly

Look for arc-shaped cracks near the top of the slope, ground bulging at the base, trees or fence posts leaning downhill, and pavement or structures cracking in a consistent direction. Persistent wet spots or seeps are a strong indicator. If any of these are present and getting worse season over season, the slope is moving.
